Letter of St. James 1:17-18, 21b-22, 27 Mark 7:1-8, 14-15, 21-23
St. James gives us the banner slogan for this Sunday’s Scriptures: “Be doers of the word and not hearers only, deluding yourselves.” Easier said than done in these times when accusatory fingers are being pointed at everyone from Church to political leaders and even to family members whose lifestyles differ from our own.
How difficult is it to confront the evil “worm” that sometimes become deeds in the behaviors of others? How difficult is it to confront the lack of integrity and focus on the Lord in our own lives? Even though we are midway in Ordinary Time, the call to follow Jesus through these Scriptures is more and more demanding.
These are troubled times and these “troubled waters” have “a bridge” in the life, death and resurrection of Jesus. We are called to personal conversion and greater integrity as individuals and as members of political and religious communities. We are confirmed to call others to the commitment to truly serve God by not deluding ourselves. When we do live the Word of God then, and then only, can change happen in ourselves and in others by the grace of God. Now is the time of salvation. Now.
