Today, Mission Sunday, is dedicated to praying for missionaries through out the world.. I am a missionary in the Dominican Republic, working with Dominicans (mostly the marginal) and Haitians. My work is involved in teaching, being a principal and co-ordinator for Religious Education. I have learned and understood what it means to be a missionary, for I believe that a missionary is for everyone who desires to follow Christ, not only by what they say and do, but mostly by how they live.
A missionary is one who announces the Good News by their lives. Isaiah states in his 4th canticle of the suffering servant, anticipating the mission Jesus completed, that he didn’t come to be served but to serve and give his life for us. Together with Him is what we should be realizing today. Wherever we are we can do this - in our homes, at work, on the street, in our Churches. We are all missionaries.
In Hebrews- Jesus is close to us and has mercy on our weakness, for all his missionaries disciples who proclaim the Gospel everywhere.
The missionary disciple of Jesus is distinguished for their humble service of others, which was the style of Jesus that became the last servant of all.
The Gospel shows this clearly as Jesus speaks to the two brothers, James and John. But then he speaks to the others- who wants to be great, must be a servant to the others...
This year we are closing the mission here and I will be heading back to Buffalo, after 29 years, looking forward to be a missionary to those with whom I am asked to work, within whatever ministry I am asked to do. My life is for Christ and to be a true follower, a disciple of his.
Let us pray for the gift of the Spirit to be true missionaries in what situations and wherever the Lord desires for us.
