Sheep do listen! One day I was headed toward a village for my Bible Reflection Group on my moped. Having access to only one dirt road to enter or leave the town it was always important to be ever conscious of sharing it. And on this particular day I was expected to yield for several hundred sheep heading in my direction. I graciously moved as far right of the narrow road as possible. But perhaps you already know…sheep are not too bright!! Some tried to take a shortcut over me. Shepherds immediately came to my rescue using sounds only recognizable to their flock. Within seconds they were herded around me.
Every time I hear this passage or one similar to it, I remember that day and picture Jesus smiling brightly but tenderly when he called us ‘sheep’. I imagine that upon reflection we too see that now and then we have acted in ways that were not too bright and on occasion felt we lost our way. But Jesus is always there for us. He is both Shepherd and Lamb. As Shepherd he cares for us and leads us and as Lamb he laid down his life for us.
Looking for wholeness and goodness is at the center of who we are. The only way is to follow Him along the paths of self-sacrifice, becoming a lamb for the sake of another. We hardly need to look for opportunities. They abound in our daily living. May we keep our ears attentive and our hearts steadfast in following the voice of the One who loves us.
