As Sisters of St. Mary celebrating our 200 anniversary of our foundation, we were founded from the beginning to work with the poor and the marginal of society. Today’s readings encourage us to go forth on the path that our founders.
Luke’s story evokes the experience of ancient Israel.
Just as Moses chose 70 Elders to participate in his work with the people of Israel (Numbers 11) so Jesus chooses 70 for his mission of bringing God’s reign. He sends them ahead of him “two by two” to preach and heal in places he is yet to visit. In other words, they are to share in the prophetic ministry of Jesus as the seventy elders shared in the work of Moses, God’s prophet of old.
This is just the beginning of Jesus’ long journey to Jerusalem. So we join in the journey, we might consider what it means to be lambs among wolves, or among those whom we have constructed as wolves, what it means to be bearers of the gospel of peace, and what it means in our time to travel light. We might consider the gift of partnership in ministry and even embrace new partnership for the sake of the mission of peace.
This is a prayer I use everyday: Good morning God, there is not anything that you and I cannot handle together today.
Let us pray to the Holy Spirit as we begin our Chapter in Belgium.
